Being a very wide field, the scope of employment in the tourism sector is very bright and the potential is still largely untapped. Career opportunities exist both in the public and private sector. They deal with almost everything connected with travel including the shortest route to the destination, travel mode, the important documents that will be required (visa, passport, vaccination certificates etc.), suitable places to stay, current exchange rates, tourist attractions to visit, climate and they will plan the trip keeping in mind the clients’ preferences, budgets and special needs.

In travel agencies there are openings for reservation and counter staff, Sales and Marketing staff, Tour escorts and tour operators, cargo and courier agencies etc. Several large travel agencies also offer short-term training programmes, and tend to absorb most of the candidates. The hotel Industry is basically a service industry providing food and accommodation to the Visitors. It is one which requires a large amount of manpower, with a wide variety of skills. In Lombardy many vacancies are expected to be filled within the next decade.

An hotel offers career opportunities in its various departments such as Operations, Front office, House keeping, Food and Beverages, Accounting, Engineering/ Maintenance, Sales, Public relations and Security etc. One can enter this field through direct entry in some departments or through hotel management institutes. You also need budgeting and planning skills. Chefs should be creative, organised and able to work well under pressure. They should be enthusiastic and able to motivate their staff. They need to be quick on their feet yet patient and careful. They should be open to learning about new cooking methods, recipes and menus. Chefs should have a good sense of taste and smell, and a reasonable level of strength and fitness to lift large and heavy pots and ingredients. They also need a good level of stamina as they spend long hours on their feet.

Trying to find employment is not so much a numbers game as it is analyzing logically which organizations or sectors in your particular area would need someone with your background and abilities. For instance, I found that there are numerous companies that need English speakers to assist in their services: cooking tour groups, walking and bicycle tours, painting and art schools, ceramic schools, etc. Many of these are owned and run by American companies. Your role could be booking or guiding tours or managing the groups and itineraries. You can find a multitude of agencies on the Internet if you search on the region and the interest you have. The Italian yellow pages online can assist you in finding these as well.

Of course you will need all your work papers in order if you are planning to earn your income in Italy and consequently do your tax returns in Italy. Italian tax laws are very complicated and you should seek out an accountant or commercialista to help you. If you work as an independent consultant, you should always have a written contract binding both parties. You can draft the contract in English. It is also wise to request a small deposit up front for any work. The deposit usually is not denied if the client is serious about the work you will render and about paying you.

Employment in Italy is regionally oriented and the best research you can do before coming to Italy is to study the region you plan to come to. Ask yourself the following questions: What is the main industry or industries that this city or town is involved with? For instance, the city of Arezzo is the gold jewelry manufacturing capital of Italy and it has hundreds of big and small jewelry companies that export and may be looking for fluent English speakers. What is the up-and-coming industry or company of this town?

News events will steer you towards new health spas, new museums, new facilities, new tourism offices, etc. What is the history, culture and attitude of the townspeople? Are they open to foreigners? What products do they excel in producing? For instance the towns of Montepulciano and Montalcino, or the Franciacorta are famous wine-producing centers with numerous companies that export to the U.S. These could be great venues for English-speaking people.

In the end remember that before you start a job, it is helpful to know what the job will be like. In any case if you want to succeed in your career keep well in mind that you will have to work very hard and be always very serious, polite, dynamic, open-minded and motivated and get several years of job experience.  You will have to acquire deep professional skills and competences, you will have to be fluent in modern languages, and you will also need a strong self-control and effective personal human qualities. Then, if you have at least five or six years experience in your field (Restaurants, Hotels, Catering Industry, Tourism, etc.) you will be able to become a trainee manager, consequently an assistant manager and finally a general manager. April, fourth month of the Gregorian calendar year. It has 30 days. The Romans gave this month the name Aprilis, derived from aperire (“to open”), probably because it is the season when buds begin to open; it was called Eostre (Easter) month by the Anglo-Saxons. Playing tricks on the first day of April is a custom among European peoples.

On April 1st you will probably be on the look-out for any possible practical jokes. If your colleagues tell you to do something slightly unusual, you might think twice before doing it. Millions of people the world over will be in a similar position. The Indians will, however, have completed their entertainment a day earlier: their Huli festival takes place on March 31st. If you do have the misfortune to be made an April fool, then you might like to take some comfort from considering the origins of this bizarre custom.

April Fools’ Day or All Fools’ Day, the first day of April. On this day it is customary to play practical jokes on people, causing them to believe something that isn’t true or to go on a fruitless errand. Although the origin of the custom is unknown, a common theory is that it developed as part of ancient spring festivals. April Fools’ Day jokes are generally amusing but harmless. For example, someone may give a friend the telephone number of the zoo, telling her to return a call from “Mr. Fox.”

The origins of April Fools’ Day are not certain, although several theories have been proposed. Before the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in 1582, the New Year was celebrated between March 25 (the old date of the spring equinox) and April 1. One of the most credited hypotheses is that, as a result of the change of calendar, not everyone got used to the change and were then referred to as the “April fools”. Hence the burlesque origin of April 1.

In Europe, the festivities of the first of April became customary around the end of 1500: a few years after the adoption of the new Gregorian calendar. In the France of King Charles IX and in the Germany of the Habsburgs, the tradition gets under way and then spreads in England (in the eighteenth century) and in the other European states.

Legend has it that many French, opposed to this change or simply careless, continued to exchange gifts between March and April, celebrating the New Year as in the old days. Pranksters began to mock them, delivering them absurd or empty gifts during non-existent parties. In the empty gift you could find a card with the words poisson d’avril: April Fool’s Day, in French.

Poisson d’avril, or pesce d’Aprile in Italian, yeah, but what does fish have to do with it? There’s an explanation for that, too, and it’s that fish are easily hooked. How the victims of pranks “bite” easily to tease. It must be said, however, that sometimes it is really difficult not to fall for it: also because the imagination has no limits and the pranks do not even, in fact they can pass from the classrooms of schools, playgrounds, television and websites.

In Italy the custom of 1 April is recent: it dates back to the years between 1860 and 1880. The first city to welcome the French habit was Genoa, where the passion for April jokes landed in its lively port. The tradition was rooted first among the middle and upper classes, then took root among the rest of the population.

Therefore April 1 is recognized as a day for pranks in Germany, France, Great Britain, the United States, Canada, and elsewhere. In India, the last day of the feast of Huli, March 31, is regarded as a day for mischief. In France, an April fool’s prank is called a poisson d’Avril (April fish), and in Scotland it is an April gowk or cuckoo. In the UK, jokes and tricks can be played up until noon on 1 April. After midday it’s considered bad luck to play a trick. Anyone who forgets this and tries a joke in the afternoon becomes an ‘April Fool’ themselves.

Some newspapers, TV channels and well-known companies publish false news stories to fool people on 1 April. One of the earliest examples of this was in 1957 when a programme on the BBC, the UK’s national TV channel, broadcast a report on how spaghetti grew on trees. The film showed a family in Switzerland collecting spaghetti from trees and many people were fooled into believing it, as in the 1950s British people didn’t eat much pasta and many didn’t know how it was made!

A few years ago, for example, the famous English astronomer and radio host Patrick Moore announced instead that an exceptional alignment of Pluto and Jupiter planned for 9:47 on the morning of April 1 would have canceled the effects of Earth’s gravity, and all the inhabitants of the planet would start floating like astronauts in space!

Most British people wouldn’t fall for the spaghetti trick today, but in 2008 the BBC managed to fool their audience again with their Miracles of Evolution trailer, which appeared to show some special penguins that had regained the ability to fly. Two major UK newspapers, The Daily Telegraph and the Daily Mirror, published the ‘important story’ on their front pages. The gullible British swallowed it, as they say, “hook, line and sinker”.

So, what kind of jokes do people play? Well, a simple example would be telling your friend that their shoelaces are undone. Then, when they bend down to do them up, you shout, ‘April Fool!’, and they realise their shoelaces are fine. Maybe it’s not your kind of humour, but watch out, there’s always someone who will find it hilarious! In Ireland, a popular prank is to send someone on a ‘fool’s errand’.

The victim is sent to deliver a letter, supposedly asking for help. When the person receives the letter, they open it, read it and tell the poor messenger that they will have to take the letter to another person. This continues and the victim ends up taking the message to several different people until someone feels sorry for them and shows them what the letter says: ‘Send the fool to someone else.’

April Fool’s Day fans say it encourages fun and laughter, and one study found that it reduces stress and therefore could be good for your heart. Other people point out that it can have negative consequences, like confusion, worry or wasting time and resources. In France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and French-speaking areas of Canada and Switzerland, the 1 April tradition is known as the ‘April Fish’. A common joke is to try to stick a paper fish onto a victim’s back without being noticed.

The origins of the April fools joke are somewhat obscure. The first references in English literature are to be found in the seventeenth century. It would appear that there was some connection between the April fool and the first cuckoo. The victims of such jokes were referred to as “April gowks”: this is a northern dialect word which means cuckoo. The gowk, or cuckoo, was the unfortunate person who was sent on a false errand. The English even had a proverb for the occasion: “First of April, hunt the gowk. You may send a fool whither you will”.

In modern times the advent of the telephone has added a new dimension to the false errand. One April 1st back in the 1950’s a Mr. Fox arrived at work and found a message on his desk telling him to ring Primrose 2323 in order to speak to a Mr. Lion. When Mr. Fox dialled the number and asked to speak to the fictitious Mr. Lion, he was surprised to find that he had rung London Zoo. A spokesperson for Dublin Zoo said staff had lost their sense of humour’ after they received more than 100,000 calls asking for invented names such as Mr C Lyons, Anna Conda and G Raffe! The callers were victims of a phone hoax, who contacted the zoo after receiving a text message encouraging them to make the call.

The fact that April is the month in which such pranks are played undoubtedly has something to do with the change of season. The first of April marks the arrival of spring: this causes many people to indulge in folly, romantic or otherwise. It is perhaps not surprising that April 1st has seen practical jokes of a romantic nature. William Congreve’s play, “The Old Bachelor” (1693), tells the story of “one of love’s april fools.” Heartwell, an aging woman-hater”, falls in love with Silvia, the mistress of another. The hapless” Heartwell is fooled into marrying her and thus becomes the laughing-stock of all his friends.

A charming classical reference to April fools can be found in the Reverend Brewer’s “Dictionary of Phrase and Fable”, originally published in 1870. Brewer tells the mythological tale” of Proserpina and Pluto, god of the underworld. Legend has it that Proserpina was picking daffodils in the Elysian meadows one April morning when Pluto suddenly appeared. He promptly carried her off to the underworld where he made her his queen. Proserpina’s mother, Ceres (the goddess of core, appropriately enough) heard her daughter’s cries and went in search of her echo. But her search was in vain: Ceres went on “a fool’s errand”.

Brewer examines other explanations of the origins of April fools. There is one theory that it may originate from the mockery trial of Jesus in which he was sentenced to death by Pontius Pilate: there is certainly a connection with April as the trial occurred a few days before Easter. I am happy to say that Brewer rejects this theory as unconvincing.

On April Fool’s Day 1998, the American hamburger chain Burger King announced that it had created a left-handed hamburger. The advert for the ‘new product’ explained that all the ingredients had been rotated 180 degrees so that it was more comfortable for left-handed people to pick up and eat. The following day, Burger King admitted that this advertisement had been a hoax, but said that thousands of customers had gone to restaurants across the USA asking for a left-handed burger.

Whatever the origins of April fools, its character has undoubtedly changed in modern times. In the first place, it has lost its romantic element. Nowadays amorous pranks are played on February 14th when lovers, prospective lovers and mere saboteurs send anonymous Valentine cards. Secondly, people are becoming less susceptible to practical jokes. As early as 1842 a certain General Thompson warned of the dangers of mass literacy: “It will be difficult to make April fools of a whole people that can read and write.”

It is ironic that the age of telecommunications, which has increased the possibilities of practical jokes, has also increased people’s insensitivity to them. After the great success of the spaghetti documentary there followed a spate of television and newspaper hoaxes in Britain on April 1st.

Even the British got the hang of it after a while: last year’s April 1st documentary, in which the B.B.C. announced that St. Paul’s Cathedral was to be dismantled brick by brick and moved to the countryside, was something of a flop. If you want a practical joke to work in the 1980’s, it is better to organise it on another day.

As we have seen, in France, as in Italy, the expression poisson d’avril is used. In English-speaking countries, such as the United Kingdom and America, instead, it is called April fool’s day (“The Day of the April fool”), where the term “fool” reminds the Fool, the jester of the medieval courts, thus emphasizing the playful connotation of the party. Finally, in Germany, Aprilscherz is more simply the “April Prank”.

In the Highlands of Scotland the April Fool lasts two days, in the second, the Taily Day, you enjoy to attach on the back of the unlucky (fools or gawls) a sign with the words “Kick me!” (Give me a kick). In Portugal, the days dedicated to pranks are Sunday and Monday before Lent, in which whole packs of flour are thrown on friends! India also has its April Fools’ Day. However, it falls a day earlier, on March 31. On that date we celebrate the Huli festival to celebrate spring and make fun of everyone.

But some people have always had a tendency to suspect any information that is given on April 1st. In 1964, for example, there was a boat strike in Venice on the day in question. A group of perceptive Dutch tourists were at first amused and later angered by this news. Yes, it was a very funny joke, but there was no need to keep it up the whole day. In fact the strike was genuine. It was a cruel twist of fate that of all the days of the year in which the Venetians could organise a boat strike, they chose April fools day.

Everywhere, in Europe and around the world, April 1 is still celebrated a little Carnival! What’s more in the era of ‘fake news’ it’s often hard on a normal day of the year to work out when we’re being tricked into believing something that isn’t true, but on April Fool’s Day you need to be even more alert. No one knows exactly how the tradition started, but there are plenty of people who enjoy this light-hearted day and are happy to keep the tradition alive.

As I wrote in other two articles about the influence of Latin in the English language we must be conscious that the English language is full of words that come from Latin or from Romance or Neo-latin languages, such as French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese ans so on.

A Latinism therefore (from Medieval Latin: Latinismus) is a word, idiom, or structure in a language other than Latin that is derived from, or suggestive of, the Latin language. The Term Latinism refers to those loan words that are borrowed into another language directly from Latin (especially frequent among inkhorn terms); English has many of these, as well. There are many Latinisms in English, and other (especially European) languages.

Did you know how much of the English language comes from Latin? About 80% of the English we speak can be traced back to Latin. Many English words share Latin roots with the Romance languages such as Spanish, French, and Italian, so it’s often easy to decode a new word by considering the bits of Latin you know. For example, the Latin root “aud” means “to hear,” which forms the basis for the English words “auditorium” and “audience,” both of which have to do with listening.

But then we have also many Latin phrases and abbreviations that are still used in English; they are typically used in laws and legal documents, but not necessarily only in these texts, and they are more commonly in written English than in spoken English. So here’s a guide to the most common Latin words that are used in English. Learn these and you’ll sound like a native English speaker. Some Latin comes to English in more than the roots of words. There are many phrases used wholesale from the original Latin. It pays to know these common Latin words and phrases we use in English as they come up in a variety of situations. You’ll often see Latin still used in inscriptions or used as an organization’s motto, but you may also be surprised how often it crops up in day-to-day use.

Common Latin Words and Phrases We Use in English with their meanings

Ad hoc: To this, specific.
In Latin, ad hoc literally means to this, which has been adapted by English speakers as a saying that denotes that something is created or done for a particular purpose, as necessary.
We did not have an HR manager at the company, so I formed an ad hoc HR committee.

Ad nauseam: repeating or continuing to the point of boredom
The apparent risks of secondary smoking have been debated ad nauseam.

Alibi: Elsewhere
The word alibi is a Latin phrase that simply means elsewhere, which will make sense to all you crime drama addicts out there who are familiar with the term as used by police, investigators, and other law enforcement professionals. Nowadays, alibi commonly refers to evidence that someone did not commit a (usually) criminal act because he or she was elsewhere at the time the act was committed.

A Priori: Based on hypothesis or theory, rather than experience. Derived by logic, with no observed facts.
Although I have never been a bachelor myself, I of course know a priori that all bachelors are unmarried.

Bona fide: Unquestionable, in good faith.
Since my boss has never been friendly to me, I was surprised when he offered me his bona fide advice on how I could succeed in business.

Bonus: Good. Bonus, from the Latin adjective bonus, which means good, refers to any number of good things in its current English usage.
Most often, bonus refers to an extra sum of money or reward from one’s employer for good performance, which of course is always a good thing.

Carpe diem: Seize the day!
An exclamation urging someone to make the most of the present time and not worry about the future.

Cogito ergo sum: I think, therefore I am.
French philosopher Descartes’ famous formula of 1641 attempting to prove his own existence.

Caveat emptor: let the buyer beware.
The principle that the buyer is responsible for checking the quality and suitability of goods before a purchase is made.

Circa; c. around; approximately
The house was built circa 1870.

Coitus interruptus: interrupted congress; aborting sexual intercourse prior to ejaculation.
Coitus interruptus is the only form of birth control that some religions allow.

Compos mentis: in control of the mind (often used ironically).

De facto: in fact; in reality. Nowadays, it is used to highlight something that is simply a fact or someone who holds a position, with or without the right to do so.
She was the de facto leader of the book club.
Although the Emperor was the head of state, the de facto ruler of Japan was the Shogun.

Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori: It is a sweet and glorious thing to die for one’s country.
From Horace, Odes III, 2, 13. Used by Wilfred Owen for the title of his anti-war poem Dulce et Decorum Est.

Commonly confused with the similar Latin term i.e., e.g. stands for the Latin phrase exempli gratia, meaning for the sake of example. In English, it is used to introduce a list of examples in place of the phrase such as.

Ego: I. A popular term in psychology, ego in fact began as the Latin equivalent of the first person pronoun, I.
It makes sense when considering its modern meaning, which refers to an individual’s sense of self-worth or self-esteem.

Ergo: therefore, consequently. It is one Latin phrase that has maintained its meaning exactly in English usage.
I have never been to Kim’s apartment. Ergo, I cannot tell you what it looks like.

Erratum: error; mistake.
Lists of errors from a previous publication are often marked “errata” (the plural, meaning errors).

Et cetera: etc, and the rest; and so on; and more.

Ex gratia: from kindness or grace (without recognizing any liability or legal obligation).
They received an undisclosed ex gratia payment.

Extra: In addition to
A common English adjective and prefix, extra is a Latin preposition that means outside or in addition. In English, extra is an adjective, adverb, or prefix that means additional, in addition, or to a greater extent.

Festina lente: Hurry slowly.
An oxymoron =similar to “more haste, less speed”.

Habeas corpus: a court order instructing that a person under arrest be brought before a judge.
The right of habeas corpus has long been regarded as an important safeguard of individual liberty.

Sometimes mistaken for the similar abbreviation e.g., i.e. stands for the Latin phrase id est, which literally translates to that is. It is most often used to add information that states something in different words or to give a more specific example: Most of the puppies (i.e., four of the six) found homes over the weekend.

In vino veritas: in wine, truth.
Meaning that a drunk man reveals the truth about himself. 

Latin phrases still used in English

Impromptu: It means spontaneous or without preparation. Something that catches you by surprise. From the Latin phrase in promptu, meaning in readiness, impromptu is a common English adjective or adverb that describes something spontaneous.
My boss called an impromptu meeting today and my colleagues and I were totally unprepared.
She threw an impromptu birthday party for her best friend.

In loco parentis: in the place of a parent.
Teachers sometimes have to act in loco parentis.

In situ: in its original place.
The paintings have been taken to the museum but the statues have been left in situ.

In vitro: (biology) taking place outside a living organism (for example in a test tube) in vitro fertilization

Inter alia: among other things.
The report covers, inter alia, computers, telecommunications and air travel.

Intro: Within.
Originally the first-person present indicative form of the Latin verb intro, meaning to enter, intro in English usage has become a prefix or informal noun that describes the beginning of something (i.e., an introduction).

Multi: Many. Multi is the plural form of the Latin adjective multus, meaning many. In English, it is used as a prefix to describe something that contains more than one of something else.
Multicolored, multifaceted, multicultural, etc.

Nil desperandum: Do not despair.

Per: for each.
This petrol station charges $4.00 per gallon.

Per annum; p.a.: for each year
The population is increasing by about 3% per annum.

Per ardua ad astra: through struggle to the stars.
(motto of the Royal Air Force and others)

Per capita: for each person.
The country’s annual income is $30,000 per capita.

Per se: In itself, intrinsically, of an inherent nature.
My friends and I were celebrating and having a great time, but it really wasn’t a party per se.
These facts per se are not important.

Persona non grata: unacceptable or unwelcome person.
From now on, you may consider yourself persona non grata in this house.

Post-mortem: examination of a body after death; autopsy.
The post-mortem revealed that she had been murdered.

Pro bono (publico): For the good (of the public). Pro bono indicates that something is being done without payment or reimbursement.
The phrase is often applied when lawyers provide legal services for little or no money, though its use is not exclusive to the legal profession.

Pro rata: proportional; proportionally.
The car rental charge is $130 per day and then pro rata for part of a day.

Quid pro Quo: It means “of equal exchange or substitution.” Literally, it means “something for something”. You exchange something of the other’s interest for something of your own interest.
They finally agreed on a quid pro quo agreement, in which John will disclose confidential information to George in exchange for free access to George’s company database.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Who shall guard the guards?

Quod erat demonstrandum (QED): which was to be demonstrated.
The abbreviation is often written after a mathematical proof.

Re: about; concerning; regarding
Re simply means about, and in modern times, we see it used most often in responses to emails and in other correspondence to refer to an earlier topic of discussion.
Re: Unpaid Invoice

Sine qua non: essential condition; thing that is absolutely necessary.
Words are a sine qua non of spoken language.

Semi: Half
A prefix borrowed from Latin, semi translates to half. When used in English, it indicates that something is incomplete or partially finished.
Semidetached, semiautomatic, semi-final, etc.

Status quo: Existing state of affairs
This straight-up Latin phrase literally translates to the state in which and is used in English to describe an existing state of affairs, usually related to political or social issues.
Monarchies naturally wish to maintain the status quo.

Sub rosa (adv.): privately, secretly
Latin, literally “under the rose,” which was regarded as a symbol of secrecy

Tempus fugit.
“Time flies.”

Terra firma: dry land; the ground as opposed to the air or sea.
Sandokan and his men set foot on terra firma after three weeks at sea.

Veni, vidi, vici.
“I came, I saw, I conquered.”
The report sent by Julius Caesar to the Roman Senate after his battle in 47 BC against King Pharnaces II.

Verbatim: in exactly the same words.
I had to memorize the text verbatim.

Versus; vs.: against.
What are the benefits of organic versus inorganic foods?
In the case of Trump versus Biden, the judges decided…

Vice versa: the other way round. Vice versa is a Latin phrase that literally means in a turned position. In English, it is commonly used to indicate that two things are interchangeable.
My telephone serves me, and not vice versa.
